Is College Still Worth It?

It's the question every parent and counselor is asked. Here's what the national data actually says — and why Kettering outperforms the average on every metric that matters.

The evidence is clear: a four-year degree remains one of the highest-return investments a young person can make. Degree holders earn 86% more annually than those with only a high school diploma — and that advantage compounds over an entire career. Over a lifetime, that differential reaches $1.2 million in additional earnings.

Unemployment for college graduates sits under 3% — roughly half the rate for high school graduates. And all net job growth over the past decade went exclusively to degree holders. The question for families isn't whether college is worth it. It's which college delivers the best return.

Understanding the A/B Calendar

Kettering's academic calendar is unlike any other university in Michigan. Instead of traditional semesters, students rotate between on-campus academic terms and off-campus paid co-op terms throughout all four years.

A-Track Students
📚 A-Term (Aug–Nov) On Campus
💼 B-Term (Nov–Feb) Co-op

📚 B-Term (Nov–Feb) On Campus
💼 A-Term (Aug–Nov) Co-op
📚 B-Term (Nov–Feb) On Campus
What does this mean for families?
About half the student body is on campus at any given time. Move-in, graduation, and breaks follow this rhythm rather than traditional semester timing. Some students graduate in August (A-track), others in December or May.
How is the track assigned?
Students are placed on a track at admission based on availability and program needs. Both tracks lead to the same degree and the same co-op experience.
Can students switch employers between rotations?
Yes. Many students work with the same employer across multiple rotations (deepening the relationship), while others choose different employers to broaden their experience. Both approaches are supported.
🔄

Co-op Is a
Financial Strategy

Kettering's co-op model isn't an internship add-on. It's the foundation of the degree — and for families focused on cost, it's the most important number on the page.

💡
Offsets the Cost of Attendance
Earning $45,000–$70,000 over four years meaningfully reduces the net cost of a Kettering education. Students who co-op consistently offset 40–60% of living expenses.
🤝
Skips the Entry-Level Queue
With 2.5 years of real professional experience at graduation, Kettering graduates routinely bypass entry-level roles. Many receive full-time offers before walking across the stage.
🎯
Real Employers, Real Responsibility
550+ employer partners including GM, Bosch, Whirlpool, Delphi, Stryker, and others. Students hold professional roles — not coffee-fetching internships.
🏆
~1 in 3 Graduate Debt-Free
Thanks to co-op earnings combined with financial aid, approximately 1 in 3 Kettering graduates leave with zero student loan debt. Of those who do borrow, 1 in 4 repays within 2 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions parents and counselors ask most — answered directly.

How does Kettering's co-op program actually work?
Kettering operates on a unique alternating schedule: students rotate between 11-week academic terms on campus and 11-week paid, full-time co-op placements throughout all four undergraduate years. This 50/50 model means students complete approximately 2.5 years of professional experience before graduation. Co-op positions are real professional roles — not internships — at companies including GM, Bosch, Whirlpool, Stryker, and 550+ other employer partners. Most students earn $45,000–$70,000 in total co-op compensation during their program.
What is the real cost after financial aid?
The published tuition is $25,325 per term (full-time). However, 100% of incoming freshmen receive scholarship or grant aid averaging $23,367 per year. After aid, and factoring in co-op earnings of $45,000–$70,000 over the full program, the estimated annual net cost drops to approximately $28,380. Is Kettering accredited? What does ACBSP mean?
Yes. Kettering University's School of Management is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) — a globally recognized accreditation that validates academic quality, teaching excellence, and continuous improvement in business education. ACBSP focuses specifically on the quality of teaching and learning outcomes. In addition, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Kettering's MBA faculty #1 nationally for five consecutive years.
How does Kettering compare to other Michigan business schools?
Kettering graduates earn the highest median starting salary in Michigan ($75,700). Georgetown University ranks Kettering #1 in Michigan and #21 nationally for return on investment — ahead of every other Michigan institution. What makes Kettering unique is the combination of STEM-integrated coursework and 2.5 years of paid professional experience. No other Michigan business school offers this depth of real-world integration before graduation.
What if my student doesn't have a clear career direction yet?
That's common — and it's actually one of Kettering's advantages. The co-op model lets students explore multiple employers and industries during their undergraduate years, giving them real-world exposure that clarifies career direction far more effectively than a major declaration ever could. Many students enter the Business Analytics or Management & Technology Leadership concentrations precisely because they're broad enough to build on in many directions.
Will my student be able to handle the workload?
Kettering is academically rigorous — and the co-op schedule adds structure that most students find clarifying rather than overwhelming. With 72% of classes under 20 students and an 11:1 student-faculty ratio, students have access to professors in ways that simply aren't possible at large universities. Tutoring, academic coaching, and a dedicated counselor are all available at no additional cost.
What does "STEM-integrated business" actually mean?
It means business students don't just study spreadsheets and management theory — they develop genuine technical fluency alongside business strategy. School of Management students take courses in data science, AI applications, process optimization, and systems thinking alongside their business core. The result is graduates who can lead technical teams, speak the language of data, and make decisions backed by quantitative analysis — a combination that commands a premium salary in virtually every industry.
What financial aid is available beyond scholarships?
Beyond institutional scholarships (avg. $23,367/year), students can receive federal Pell Grants (up to $7,395 for 2025–26), federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans, state grants, and external scholarships. Kettering-specific awards include the GM STEM Opportunity Scholarship (covering remaining tuition for qualifying students), Michigander Scholars Program (up to $10,000 for Michigan residents), and merit-based awards. Need-based aid averages $32,979/year for eligible students.
How safe is the campus and surrounding area?
Campus safety is a priority at Kettering. The university maintains 24/7 campus security, a blue-light emergency phone system, and partners with city services. The Kettering campus itself is a well-maintained, tight-knit community. Families are encouraged to visit campus in person to get a firsthand sense of the environment — schedule a visit here.
